SIGHAN is a Special Interest Group of the Association for Computational Linguistics. It provides an umbrella for researchers in industry and academia working on all aspects of Chinese language processing. Membership is open to anyone who professes an interest in Chinese language processing. The official language of SIGHAN is English. The SIG does not levy membership dues. The constitution provides for a Chair, a Vice-Chair, a Treasurer, a Secretary, and up to seven Information Officers (two from China, two from Taiwan, one from Hong Kong, one from Singapore, one from the United States). All officers serve two-year terms and are elected by a vote of the membership. SIGHAN was established in 2001. Its constitution was modeled on that of SIGLEX. The first numbered SIGHAN workshop was held at COLING 2002 in Taipei; an earlier Chinese Language Processing workshop was held in 2000, before the SIG was formed. Ten numbered workshops have been held to date, most recently SIGHAN-10 at ACL 2024 in Bangkok, along with three CIPS–SIGHAN joint conferences on Chinese language processing.
